WinSport, Training & Why Olympians Might Love The Village At Trinity Hills

At The Village at Trinity Hills, we're really excited about the active living opportunities that our beautiful 3- and 4-bedroom townhomes will give to Calgarians. Call us ambitious, but we've even been hoping that our incredible location next to WinSport and a beautiful 160-acre nature park might just inspire some future podium athletes to call our community home. We recently sat down with Canadian Olympic Bobsledder Justin Kripps to talk about his training at WinSport, and how he thinks his fellow Olympians may think about The Village at Trinity Hills.

The Interview

Q. When did you start training at WinSport?
A: I started training at WinSport in the summer of 2006, before the new buildings went in.

Q: Are you from Calgary?
A: I was born in Hawaii and grew up there and in Summerland BC.

Q: What is it like to train at WinSport?
A: Training at WinSport is amazing, it’s one of the best training facilities in the world, I’ve visited many, and it’s particularly special for my sport since there is an ice house for practicing our starts and pushing techniques on real sleds on real ice all year round as well as a bobsleigh track to train and race on in the winter

Q: Why do you choose WinSport as your training facility?
A: Aside from the world class facilities, I choose WinSport for my training because of the environment. With so many high performance and professional athletes training at WinSport, inspiration and motivation is all around you. On any given day when the workouts are getting hard and you don’t know if you can push through, you can look to your left and see an Olympic champion pushing their limits, look to your right and see an NHL player staying in shape in the off season; it creates an amazing training environment

Q: How does WinSport help you train year-round to achieve your goals?
A: WinSport has a 100m indoor bobsleigh start track that’s fully iced almost year-round which is huge for us practicing in the summer when there are no iced bobsleigh tracks anywhere else in the world

Q: Since The Village of Trinity Hills is so close to WinSport, do you for-see Olympians and athletes settling at the new community?
A: Absolutely. I expect there will be athletes and Olympians settling in Trinity Hills, already many of my teammates and friends from team Canada live in the communities surrounding WinSport for the convenience of living close to training, but also the proximity to the mountains and lack of traffic.

Q: How did you get into bobsleigh?
A: I was invited by a recruiter to try the sport when they saw me racing the 100m at a university track meet in Vancouver.

Q: What is it about bobsledding that keeps you in the sport?
A: I love the speed and precision of the sport, everything matters in bobsleigh, and it’s all to maximize the speed. To go fast you have to race on the edge and it makes it a very exciting sport to compete in.

Q: What Olympics have you competed in?
A: I’ve competed at the 2010, 2014, and 2018 Olympics.

Q: What is your secret to being an Olympic bobsledder?
A: One of my secrets is to make a goal and a plan to get there. The plan has to be flexible, but the goal has to always be the priority.

I love the speed and precision of the sport, everything matters in bobsleigh, and it’s all to maximize the speed. To go fast you have to race on the edge and it makes it a very exciting sport to compete in.Justin Kripps
